Overview
Gamberale is known for being the highest village in the entire Province of Chieti. It stands among the rocky spurs of Mount Sant'Antonio, to the left of the Sangro River, in a naturalistic setting that makes it unique and fascinating.
Its origins date back to the early Middle Ages, but the first historical evidence is recorded from the 12th century. In the 15th century it was dominated by the de Anichino family, who gave way in the 18th century to the Mascitelli of Atessa.
From the past it preserves the remains of the medieval castle, which dominates the characteristic historic centre and protects it like a defensive warrior never defeated over the centuries. The Castle, with the soaring tower equipped with battlements, is characterized by white plastered facades which contrast with the stone parts, in a particular game of colours and reflections.
Gamberale is ideal for your winter holidays in the snow in the evocative scenery of the Pizzi Mountains. Here, between the municipalities of Gamberale and Pizzoferrato, in the Maiella National Park, you will find beautiful ski resorts, made so by the peculiar environment made up of dense woods and limestone towers of the morge. Going down these ridges is a one-of-a-kind experience.
But Gamberale is not only ideal for winter mountain lovers: its Valle del Sole is a popular destination for those who want to enjoy natural beauty, with long relaxing walks. In the village you can taste the typical regional and local cuisine, such as maccheroni alla chitarra, seasoned with a mixed ragù of beef, pork or lamb, followed, perhaps, by the so-called turnips strascinate, turnips first soaked in cold water, then boil with the browned garlic and sauté in the pan with plenty of oil and chilli pepper. You must try the fiadoni, ravioli-shaped, typical and tasty, prepared with a mixture of eggs, oil, white wine and flour, with a filling made from various cheeses, mainly hard ones such as rigatino and pecorino, eggs and different spices.
