Overview

Descrizione lunga

Perched on a ridge on the slopes of Mount Cagno, dominating the wide Piana delle Rocche plain, Rocca di Cambio is the highest municipality in the Apennines.

The village is a well-established center of tourism and winter sports, thanks in part to the creation of the Campo Felice ski resort and is also chosen by many as a destination for summer vacations, pleasant, relaxing, full of sunshine and pure, fresh air that gently accompany long walks.

Rocca di Cambio, however, is not only sports and natural peace. While you are in this beautiful, ancient village, take the opportunity to look around a bit and discover some of its little gems. As you walk by, you will find yourself skirting the 9th-century Longobard Castle Tower, the ruins of which were incorporated into the construction of the bell tower of St. Peter's Church between the 14th and 17th centuries.

While you are there, we suggest you to stop for a first stop-over precisely at the Church and Collegiate Church of St. Peter: originally from the 10th century, over the centuries it has been further restored and decorated, particularly with the 14th-century extension, creating a particularly beautiful symbiosis of different artistic styles. It was originally intended to have three naves, later reduced to one after the great earthquake of 1703. A recent restoration has uncovered important stone arches from the Romanesque period in the nave and a full-length stone archway accessing the bell tower staircase.

Then proceed to the Mother Church or of the Annunziata, which, built in the 16th century in a rectangular pinata with three naves and a horizontally scrolled façade divided into pilasters, holds a baptismal font from 1569 and a 15th-century wooden statue of Santa Lucia.

A destination of special value and beauty is the Abbey of Saint Lucy, dating from the 12th century. A historic church, it is the most important in the village for its valuable cycle of 13th-16th-century frescoes by Abruzzi painters of the Giotto school, depicting scenes from the life of Santa Lucia, the Passion, the Resurrection, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and an entire wall dedicated to the Last Supper.

Take a seat and enjoy some delicacies, such as sagne e fagioli, polenta, cheeses, jju Cerijje, which is a barbecued sheep roast, or flaky pizza. It is up to you to choose from all these goodies.
