Overview

Descrizione lunga

Beside the Liri river, along the Roveto Valley, immersed in a natural paradise rich in forests, waterways and greenery, San Vincenzo Valle Roveto stands. The municipality includes eight villages, including the authentic village of San Vincenzo Vecchio and other ancient hamlets of great historical interest, such as Morrea and Roccavivi.

The view that welcomes tourists offers a silent landscape, characterized by the presence of extensive olive groves which give a note of colour and charm to an already enchanting environment. The wonderful mountains and the several paths that lead to the hermitages are the ideal place for excursions on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback.

A relaxing walk through the streets of the village will lead you to discover unexpected beauties. In the Morrea area you will find the Piccolomini Castle, evidence of political and military power. Built in the second half of the 15th century in the upper part of the village, it was the summer residence of the lords of the time, home to an important military garrison. Today the remains of the fence are still visible, with semi-cylindrical bastions on the corners and the internal tower-keep.

A short distance from the old village you will find the Hermitage of the Madonna del Romitorio, a small two-storey church whose first documented appearance dates back to 1598. Its construction, however, appears to be much older. The entrance to the church is adorned with a large arch and inside there is a fresco of the Virgin with her Crucified Son.

In Valle Roveto Superiore you will also find the Sanctuary of San Diodato, where the remains of the Saint, who was the 15th abbot of the Montecassino Monastery, are kept.

Continuing on your walk, moving into the countryside, you will come across the Sanctuary of Maria delle Grazie, on the left side of the slopes of Mount Pizzo Deta, where the ruins of Rocca de Vivo, an ancient village whose existence is documented from 1215, can still be seen.

Typical of the village is the production of an excellent organic extra virgin olive oil. This green gold is a source of pride for all residents of San Vincenzo Valle Roveto.
