Overview
No-kill fishermen from around the world, gather on the riverbed of the Sangro, a generous river rich in trout.
A strongly identifiable rio, it originates in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park at 1441 meters above sea level, below the Devil's Pass, in Marsican territory, to flow after a run of about 122 kilometers, into the Adriatic, near Torino di Sangro. Its waters bathe two regions, Abruzzo and Molise, and three provinces, L'Aquila, Isernia and Chieti.
You don't need to be an expert, you just need to be passionate about this non-invasive activity, which can be practiced especially in the area from the town of Castel di Sangro, in the province of L'Aquila, location Ponte della Maddalena: here you will find the CONI Fly Fishing Gym, where you can practice freely, preserving and respecting the environment and the wildlife, putting the fish back in the water with a hook without that dart that harnesses it.
If you want to learn all of the skills of this ancient discipline, you're in the right place: since 1987 Castel di Sangro has been home to the Italian Fly Fishing School (SIM) at the former Magdalena Convent, where the "Stanislao Kuckiewicz" International Fly Fishing Museum is housed. This museum is the only one of its kind in Italy and is twinned with the American Museums in New York and Vermont and with the Swiss Museum in Caslano.
In the exhibition, you will find the tools of Kuckiewicz, inventor of the "Martin" teaspoon used successfully by fishermen all over the world, a bibliographic collection of the most significant volumes, and accessories used in ancient times.
We also recommend you to participate in the "SIM Fly Festival", held every year in June, where you can learn the ethical and cultural, as well as technical, principles of fly fishing, with knowledge of the aquatic environment, the insects that inhabit it, and the eating habits of fish.
And if you have more time to spare, in about 46 km you can reach the blue green of the Serranella Nature Reserve, near Lake Bomba or, near the outlet, on the right shore, the Regional Reserve Lecceta di Torino di Sangro.
