Overview
On the slopes of Mount San Nicola Scurcola Marsicana stands: a village nestled in nature from which extends a mountainous landscape of enchanting beauty that will leave you speechless.
The origins of this small mountain rib are very ancient: think that settlements dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages have been found here. In this archaeological site, there are remains of an Italic fortified centre located on Mount San Nicola, Mount San Felice and in the Cardosa area, as well as an underground Necropolis at Piani Palentini and an Italic-Roman Sanctuary in the San Quirico area and one in Valle San Giovanni. These many settlements provide evidence of the ancient origin of the village, but not only. Archaeological research has revealed information on the health of the inhabitants of the time and uncovered the funeral rituals practised by the Equi.
An archaic tale that you can relive and feel part of. We certainly cannot give up this side of the ancient history of Abruzzo, visible in these villages scattered along our high mountains.
Do you think it is over? Scurcola Marsicana over the centuries continued to develop and fulfil its historical role. In the 13th century, a castle consisting of a central core and tower was built by the De Pontibus nobles.
In the fifteenth century, the Orsini family took over and transformed the Castle by making Renaissance modifications and decorations. Today the Castle retains the name of the famous aristocrats: a visit will make you feel suspended between present and past, dragging you into a fairy tale of ladies and knights.
Is there anything more to add? The course of the centuries that you can breathe along the streets of Scurcola Marsicana is unique and enchanting.
Don't miss the opportunity to visit this village. Every moment is the right one, but we would like to point out a couple of occasions in which you can also experience popular traditions. During the Easter period, two events are particularly intense and evocative: the Cenacle, which commemorates the last supper, and the Calvary or Via Crucis, with a procession involving the entire population and the four Confraternities of the village.
Stay a while longer and enjoy some local specialities. We suggest, especially during the Easter period, Easter pizza, a sort of sweet bread whose dough is enriched with eggs, raisins and rum, donuts made with eggs, sugar, flour, oil and yeast and fiadoni, based on of cheese.
