Grotta Sant'Angelo - Palombaro (CH)

At the edge of the small village of Palombaro, at almost 800 meters above sea level, in a very suggestive naturalistic context within the Majella National Park, is the Grotta Sant' Angelo.

The natural cavity is accessible through a path that follows the path of an ancient Majella's tract that leads from Palombaro to the meadows of Martellese and Mount Ugni. The cavity has an entrance about 35 meters wide, partially closed by a rocky formation. Inside, resting on a wall, there are the remains of a Benedictine church: two sections of walls and a semicircular apse. The walls are made of squared stone ashlars; a row of hanging arches crown a stretch of walls and the apse, which has a frame with twisted creases. The church has a steep and irregular flooring consisting of a rocky formation. Dedicated to Sant' Angelo, the church was probably built between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, as evidenced by the architectural decorative system similar to that of San Liberatore in Maiella.
