Riding abruzzo by bicycle

Ancient villages, hermitages and churches, stone huts and medieval fortresses. As well as the the most hidden corners of Abruzzo: that’s what you could discover and enjoy riding on white roads or MTB paths, whether uphill or downhill.

An easy ride partly on asphalted road and well maintained paths. The starting point is Risorgimento square in the city of Avezzano, riding toward the village of Forme to quench your thirst thanks to the fresh water of the historical fountain. Behind it there’s the path to follow toward valle Lama street: just look at the CAI - Italian alpine club direction toward Velino mountain, so to reach Casale Da Monte lodge. The final destination is Fonte Canale, to reach riding on paths and pastures, passing through beautiful woods. Just have a break admiring the landscape or continue walking. On the way back you could visit the archaeological site of Alba Fucens.

SANTO STEFANO DI SESSANIO – ROCCA CALASCIO – Campo Imperatore: advanced - 54 kms - MTB path and asphalted road
The starting point is the village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio. A steep 3 kilometers climb leads you to Rocca Calascio astonishing castle. Then just follow the white road toward  Sessanio so to the reach the S.P. 97 (provincial road) that leads you to Campo Imperatore. The 11 kilometers uphill ride worth the effort: here you are, in front of Corno Grande - Gran Sasso d’Italia, the highest peak of the Apennine chain. One the way back pay attention to the poorly signaled paths - be careful because of the stones too - but the suggestive landscape definitely worth the effort.

ALTOPIANO DELLE ROCCHE: medium - 34 kms, a walk through fortresses villages
From Ovindoli just take the S.P. (provincial road) towards Rovere and Rocca di Mezzo: get to Terranera riding on asphalted road and cycle-paths. On the way back to Rocca di Mezzo you pass through Piani di Pezza and continue for about 4 kms on a not very easy climb to Rifugio del Lupo. From here a series of quite challenging uphill and downhill paths lead you to Ovindoli, going beyond the ski-lifts where the asphalt begins.

MONTE VALE DELLE CAPRARE – PESCASSEROLI: very challenging - 25 kms, but it worths the effort From the center of Pescasseroli, take the paved road to Passo del Diavolo and then take the dirt road towards Vallone Lampazzo. So to reach a grassy valley, though the most trained ones could choose the harsher path up to Monte Valle Caprara. From here it starts a beautiful descent on a grassy path: pay attention to the stones and to the demanding slopes. You then have an easier path, riding on stones and white road: a series of hairpin turn leads towards the center of Pescasseroli.

Whichever ride you choose, please respect some rules: do not damage the flora pedaling off the paths or on the meadows, do not disturb the fauna, do not leave waste around, respect the quiet of the environment and other visitors and moderate speed. For your personal safety always wear the helmet, choose a ride suitable for your fitness level. Always tell someone where you are going to ride.
