Santuario Incoronata

Santuario di Maria Santissima Incoronata - Vasto (CH)

The church, originally dedicated to San Martino, was built in 1738; subsequently, following a miraculous event that ended a catastrophic drought, it was consecrated to the Crowned Madonna. In 1860 it was enlarged and the Capuchin monastery was annexed.

The facade and the brick portico, however, date back to 1938. It has a graceful dome. The interior, with three naves, is finely decorated in gold and preserves beautiful wooden statues and paintings of the seventeenth century by artists of a certain fame. Furthermore, in the tympanum there is a magnificent majolica representing the coronation of the Virgin. Well done also the stone statues of San Felice da Cantalice and San Giuseppe da Leonessa. The convent has a library of about 30,000 books, ranging from the sixteenth century to the present day and dealing with literary, philosophical, theological, juridical, historical and geographical subjects: they are of considerable interest both for the knowledge of the respective themes and for the study of the history of Abruzzo and Vasto. On the last weekend of April there is a crowded party, very much felt by the Vastesi.
