In the Teramo area, between coastal Tower and Strongholds
In Martinsicuro stands one of the 18 best preserved Abruzzo coastal towers, the Tower of Charles V. which houses the Antiquarium Castrum Truentinum. Taking the provincial road 1 you reach the Fortress of Civitella del Tronto (30 km), one ofthe most monumental and impressive military engineering works ever built in Italy, with its more than 500 meters in length and 25,000 square meters of surface. Inside you can visit the Weapons Museum, the church of San Giacomo and the soldiers' quarters, but the experience that surprises most is the panoramic walk. The journey resumes towards Campli, where in the hamlet of Castelnuovo there is the Porta Angioina, a residual part of the ancient city walls; in the hamlet of Nocella it is possible to visit the Torre di Melatino. Continuing for 25 km in the direction of Castellalto, we visit the hamlet of Castelbasso, a fortified village with a characteristic "drop" shape surrounded by walls; it îs to be visited only on foot. Another reference point of the valley sighting system is Torre Gualtieri in the municipality of Cermignano, a rare example of a triangular tower in Abruzzo. The itinerary ends by retuming to the Teramo coast at the Torre del Cerrano (33 km) an ancient bulwark of the Kingdom of Naples, now home to the homonymous Marine Protected Reserve. A large car park allows a stop to visitthe entire Reserve, with the exhibition rooms inside the Tower, with the surrounding nature among the dunes where the Fratino nests, with the pine forest and the crystal clear sea.
