National Parks and Marine Protected Areas

With 3 national parks and a marine protected area, Abruzzo holds a cultural and civil record in the protection of a unique environment in Europe. Inaugurated on September 9, 1922, the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park represents Italy's oldest protected area, within which you can admire, among other wonders, the 5 ancient beech forests of Abruzzo, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017. On the Maiella, which was designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark in April 2021, there are 95 geosites, at least 22 of which hold international significance.
