L'Area Vestina, la Valle del Tirino e la Maiella

25 km away you reach Nocciano where the Renaissance castle of De Sterlich-Aliprandi dominates the town; inside, the Museum of Arts can be visited with works by Remo Brindisi, Nino Caffè, Michele Cascella and many others. At about 350 km there is the Piccolomini castle of Capestrano inside which a small military museum is set up. The building is built on the remains of a medieval fortification of which the internal square tower remains, placed in an irregular position with respect to the rest of the castle. The itinerary continues towards Lake Capodacqua {4 km) where, thanks to its crystal clear waters, it is possible to observe the remains of ancient submerged buildings (a mill and a paint factory). A submerged, fascinating and mysterious place, characterized by the low temperature of the waters which, remaining constant around ten degrees all year round, prevents the proliferation of algae and lake plants and guarantees excellent visibility, also typical ofthe Tirino River that flows in valley, defined as the cleanest in Italy. The itinerary continues towards the Sorgenti del Pescara Regional Nature Reserve in Popoli (17 km); here there is an equipped area and trails with the opportunity to spot the typical fauna of the area. Not far away, the recently restored Cantelmo di Popoli castle, dating back to the Middle Ages with a triangular plan, is worth a visit. The journey ends at the castle of Salle (26 km), immersed in the enchanting environment of the Maiella National Park, which houses the Medieval Bourbon Museum.
